Hey, I'm just getting back to playing after some years off. Some things have changed since I was playing but anyhoo, I need an amp that I can practice with at home and also be able to audition with other muscians and not get blown out of the water. I play rock but I like to play a lot of slap. Eventually, I will get something bigger if it comes to that. But just something nice for a year or so. I was looking at the new Ampeg115 Combo but I was reading the thread about Combos and now I am not so sure. Any Suggestions, I am sorry if this info has prevously been posted. I read A LOT of threads/posts and did not find any thing that matched my needs.
First off, go used. For $500 you can get a good combo or head or head\cab either in the classifieds here or Craigslist, etc... For the style you mention, a GK700rbii would fit the bill and your budget. I've seen them on here used for around $350. That'd leave you some cash to get a cab with. I highly endorse the TB Classifieds. I bought my first head (Ashdown MAG300) and cab (Avatar B210NEO) here for about $400. Also have gotten great deals on other cabs I've bought from fellow members (GK, Ampeg, Ashdown).
+1 on going with used gear. The BA115 Ampeg is only 100 watts and wont give you enough volume if you play with a drummer. Besides the new Ampeg stuff is not getting a lot of love these days. I won't open that can of worms though. A used head and 2 X 10 cabinet is your best bet. You can get some good used stuff for about the price of that new Ampeg combo amp. Used Heads $200.00 to $300.00 range: GK SWR Peavey Used Cabinets $200.00 or less range: Avatar B210 Delta or Neos 2 X 10 Peavey TVX 2 X 10 SWR WM 2 X 10
I guess I am really out of the loop but I have never heard of Ashdown amps? Can you tell me something about it? Thanks to everyone for their advice.
British designed amps. I have played some of the Mag Series amps, they are fairly inexpensive and they sound decent. Don't know how good they are but they seem ok. The ABM's are the higher end units. Here is a link. www.ashdownmusic.com
