What is a modern sounding pickup?

  1. This may sound like a moronic question but what does a modern sounding pickup sound like? I thought I knew but I may have the wrong idea.

I always thought a modern sounding pickup was kind of a boosted lows, boosted highs, and empty mids kind of tone, kind of like an EMG HZ soap bar or a Seymour Duncan Bass Line jazz pup.

Does anyone have any sound clips or examples of a "modern sounding" pickup vs. a "vintage sounding" pickup?

I would call modern any kind of bright tone with extended top end (Stanley Clarke, Mark King, etc.), and vintage are thick and dark (Jamerson, Babbit, Kaye, Osborn, Motown). Of course "modern" goes all the way back to Entwistle and Squire and that tone.

Modern doesn't have to have the mids scooped.
