What is the definition of "Boutique" basses?

    Made by small luthiers?
    Over a certain price point?
Designs that are out of the norm?
    Limit production quantities?

  2. Yes, sure, sometimes, and usually.

To me Boutique means that it's made by a small company where each instrument is all handmade. The quality should be superb in all aspects.

Doesn't mean that there are not large companies that offer lines that would meet the handmade and quality aspects but to me, it's got to be a small shop to be called Boutique.
  5. High quality, limited number.
  6. Basses which are made to order and not mass produced.

This^. Hand made and made to order. No assembly line or mass production.

There is also a difference in terminology between 'high end' and 'boutique'.
  15. Indeed.

Hand made... small (relative to large :p) production run.

My Thumb bass is 'boarder-line' boutique:

It was hand made, but is also part of a fairly large production run. That is, there are a few hundred 2002 Warwick Thumb bolt on 5 string basses around (one of their more popular models). So its not that rare. Compared to the amount of Warwick Corvettes made that year, my bass is pretty unique though. And compared to the amount of Fender Squires made that year, my bass is certainly boutique.

So I guess its a comparative study based largely in part by the size of the production run, or how many of that bass were made that year. To paraphrase colcifer:

    Unique = Boutique

Made to order = Custom (which is a type of boutique, I guess)

As far as a Warwick? That's what I'd consider high end. They are a large scale production company making an upper scale instrument, but just because one model isn't as popular to order doesn't make it boutique. The options are limited, and it is an assembly line with many employees making these, and these basses are made in big enough quantities hanging in stores all across the country.

Carl Thompson and Fodera are examples of boutique.

wikipedia says boutique means a small shopping outlet specializing in elite and fashionable items. sounds about right.
  19. I would think boutique basses aren't nearly as fashionable as something like the Road Worn series by Fender.
  20. Handmade and perfect for jazz fusion!
