What is Fender 57 P-Bass's "2nd pickup"

Discussion in 'Pickups & Electronics [BG]' started by RapierSix, Mar 9, 2008.

  1. So I have seen on a few basses these small bars that look like thumb wrests but are on the wrong side to be rests. What are these bars, I am assuming a piezo but I am not sure. Does any one know?

It actually is a "rest" but for the right hand, from back when it was common to pluck the strings with your thumb.

  3. Thanks, thats what I was thinking it would be for if it wasn't a piezo, well more like something to brace your fingers on for slapping, but still thumb work area.

  4. Piezo pickups aren't visible, since they're built into the bridge.

    Correct!

And that's why it shouldn't be called a thumbrest!

    I use it on my flats-equipped P-bass as a "slap-stopper"!
It simply says "No, Jesper. You won't wanna slap this bass as it's not the way the mighty J.J. would play it"
