    Just curious if anyone on TB can ID this. I found this picture in "Shine On", a book that came to accompany a CD boxed set.

    Sorry, accidentally pressed send. The picture says the date is 1971. It looks to be a Humbucker with two knobs, probably one volume one tone?

    That's not a humbucker, it's a chrome cover over the pickup. It's a Fender Precision.

    Makes sense, he tends to leave the covers on. I've just never seen him with that bass before.

    I've seen a lot of photos of Roger Waters, and I've never seen that bass, either.

    This is a bigger copy of the same picture;

    The photo is from 1969. The bass turns up in the video of the band rehearsing for their 14th April 1969 Royal Festival Hall gig where they debuted their 'The Man and the Journey' Suit, which featured new and old tunes as two song cycles. You get to hear it in the video, and I think Roger is wearing the same top as well, so it may well be that the photo is from this gig.

    As smcd says, it is a Precision bass with a funky paint scheme. I've seen one photo of it in colour, but I cannot find it now. It certainly didn't last that long, either getting its finish stripped (David Gilmour stripped at least one Stratocaster in the early '70s) or returned to the real owner, supposing that it was on loan for a while.

    A more mysterious bass is this Jazz bass that was borrowed for the 'Forum Musique' TV show that Pink Foyd mimed for in 1969.

    That's not just a "funky paint scheme"... from what I heard it's a WWII German camouflage pattern.

    I've never seen that picture in color, so no one knows what the color scheme is.

    Nope, actually it's "Careful With That Axe, Eugene".

    Thanks firstly to jim777 for tidying up my post!

    This is the only colour picture I've seen of this bass;

    rwbass.jpg

    Sorry it is so small! I've never seen a bigger copy.

    At the risk of being overly OCD, the track ' Careful With that Axe Eugene' was retitled "Beset by Creatures of the Deep" during this period, and didn't have the "Careful..." whispered intro either.

    I play that in my daughters room while she's falling asleep. Works like a charm!

    Sehr kosmiche und psychedelik.

    I think somebody in the Floyd community said that the finish of the bass looked like Panzer camouflage, which I think stuck well with Waters' bellicose image that he is famous for. I think it started as a joke, but the "Watersish" equipment archive site copied over this information verbatim.
