Someone asked me this question the other day and I had to think about it for awhile as there are so many great performances throughout the history of music and I said 'TeenTown' brought to you through the magic fingers of the great Jaco Pastorius.

So many! Difficult to choose! That said, on this track Jeff Berlin demonstrates the melodic potential and beauty of the bass guitar in ways that are rarely matched and in my opinion, never exceeded.

The bass break in Jethro Tull's "Bouree" and the double time section of Hot Tuna's "Hesitation Blues". Hard to get much better than those, imho.

Call me simple and crude, but My Generation wins for me every time.
Even over virtuosity like Teen Town or the countless technically superior fusion solos recorded since.

Andy West’s solo on “Kat Food”, from the Dregs “Unsung Heroes” album.

Album was released in 1981 or so. Solo was played with a pick, on a Steinberger.
    Quite funky.

I don't know if it's my favorite of all time, but it's my current white whale. Don't even know where to start with this one:

Oooh, with Eric Dolphy on bass clarinet! My bass clarinet hero / idol! (maybe doesn't play on this bass solo though)

Well, the whole song is a solo. Used to love working on it as an exercise too. It is absolutely beautiful! Jaco at his simple best. IMO. :smug:

There are so many! Here's one: Christian McBride soloing on fretless to the tune 'James' with the Pat Metheny Trio. I love this trio, and Christian's playing is always inspiring. Check it out:
