What kind of bass is this?

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by marcinkus, Jan 21, 2004.

  1. The pic is taken from Black Sabbath's Master Of Reality LP and the guy is, of course, Terry "Geezer" Butler.
But what bass does he use?

I love the sticker on his bass!

  4. that turqoise one-piece is on! the big buttons really complete the package. nothing says "rock'n'roll" like a turqoise jumpsuit.

Eeew. Look at his right hand...

Looks like something that would pop out of the ground of a freshly dug grave...

Now that I see the headstock, it is definitely not a Carvin.

    It could be a Mosrite.

No its definately not an old Carvin. Carvin's didn't look like that back in '71 or whenever the album came out.

In the first picture, the body vaguely resembled an old Carvin double cutaway, due to the angle. And it had those cheesy knobs that Carvin used for a year or two, early on.

I checked out www.carvinbassmuseum.com on the "data matrix" and in '71 and previous they didn't make any basses that look like that. But it does look like a Carvin anyway.

In the larger picture, it looks like a slightly different bass because you can't see the pickups. I found out that he used a white custom 3 pickup SG Custom at one point early on.

Wow, neat site! I had it confused for the 1987 LB40/60. Man, I really missed the date on that one!

  14. the neck/headstock looks like a Wal...?

but that bridge doesn't look traditional. The pickups look more "jazz" type, more than a humbucker, but they have those sort of plastic holders the wal pups sit in..

    maybe?

The bass that Geezer really made famous was the Dan Armstrong with the lucite body. To this day it's still referred to as "The Geezer Butler Bass". Guitar Center in Hollywood has it on display in their RockWalk "Hall of Fame".

And, that was the very first bass I ever owned. Because, Geezer had one! :)

I don't think its a Wal. Thats what I first thought when I saw the headstock, but the body doesn't look right, and its the wrong bridge. Also I read about some of the basses he's used but I never saw Wal mentioned. He plays some basses now that I've never even heard of.
