What kind of bass is this?

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by CJ_Marsicano, Mar 24, 2005.

  1. A friend of mine got this bass for his son, rather econo.

It's a Gibson short-scale bass, and the guy thinks it might be from th early 70's, but not much else. Here's a pic:

    gibsonbass.

Anybody else have a clue? It seems to have all the original parts.

I emailed the link to a few Gibson freaks that I know, and will advise if they know anything.

    Could it be a knockoff?

OK, the first guy thinks it's possibly a Japanese fake, and suggested you try George Gruhn.

    It's a 60's Kay. I'm not sure of the model, but it's a Kay.

  5. That's odd - the Gibson logo didn't appear to be pasted on.

That's a Kay allright. The headstock is the giveaway.

    No way that's a Gibson.

  7. I had my suspicions when I played it (unplugged) 'cause it sounded rather hollow for a solid-body bass, but blew it off.

    Now for a related question:

Who in the hell would take a Gibson mother-of-pearl-looking logo, and superglue it to a Kay?!?
