What "kind" of effect is this? (naming question)

    this was done by my guitairist with some cheap digitech multi or something similar.. but I like the effect, and I don't know how it is called, so I can't look for it.. I'm guessin it's a modulation, but which?

    It's a random step (aka sample and hold) filter, or possibly flanger. Xotic's Robotalk and Line 6's Liqua Flange are two pedals I can think of with this feature.

    Zvex seek wah or ooh wah + many multi effects units.

    I'd put money on it being a ZVex Seek Wah. If you listen closely you'll note that the player comes in partway through some of the steps which I don't think can happen on a sample 'n' hold effect.

    It might be another step filter (PH-3 can do this), but I don't know any that can get that extreme wah-like filtering other than the ZVex or a maybe Moogerfooger Murf.

    a Zoom B2 can do that pretty nicely

    I use to have an old Zoom 506 with that effect. It's just a synth with a step-changer or something with a name like that.
