The song is Dead Man by Jars of Clay.

I sounds like it's overdriven without so much gain but I have yet to find an OD pedal that own or have tried that can match that sound. Any suggestions?

    Thanks

  2. It's a fuzz

What the hell. That can't be fuzz. I have 3 different fuzz pedals and that sound sounds pretty clean except for when he hits the D string there's some small distortion.

Yep, for sure fuzz in that vid. I suppose it could be an all-tube amp driven hard, which results in a fuzz effect...

I'd say overdrive (even a "real tube amp" being overdriven) for the main parts, and it sounds to me like when he goes up an octave every couple of verses, he steps on a fuzz, just for those high notes. I'm not sure though.

I own a Boss ODB3 and my amp has a drive on it and I've used a few other ones and they all seem too have too much gain or don't have the sound like that. I'm not sure what I need to get that kind of sound....thinking of silly things now like http://www.talkbass.com/reviews/showproduct.php/product/659/cat/26
Which has a drive on it.

  10. I'd guess that sound is a combination of a clean di sound and a dirtier overdrive sound from an amp being mixed together.

so it'd be hard to recreate that without having the same type of amp overdrive? Probably has to be tube ODed and not from a pedal possibly???

  12. kids, let me say you're all effect deaf.

that is od + OCTAVE pedal.

    clearly.

I played it clean with octave but and it sounded pretty similar but haven't tried OD and octave.....is it tube od or can it be recreated with a pedal?

  14. I think a good old ts9 or just any overdrive pedal nowadays could create that grit. careful with guitar pedals and the loss of low end.

If you don't have one, try a behringer bod. cheap, sounds good, if ya don't like it, you just expended 20 bucks or so.

I have a boss odb3 and a one on my amp.

I would never use a pedal that compromised my low end :p

I don't hear any octave except possibly when he plays up an octave for one bar after every couple of verses, and it sounds distorted enough that it might be an octave/distortion pedal that he steps on for just those few notes.

The ODB3 is not an overdrive, no matter what's written on it; it will not provide an overdrive "degree" of dirt, it's more of a higher gain buzzy distortion. What amp are you using?

I'd say your effect deaf, there's no octave on there.

I agree, It wasn't the pedal I thought it was going to be. When I think of OD I don't think of gainy crap and am disappointed with the pedal. The OD kind of sucks on my amp too. I have a Line6 Lowdown LD300 combo amp.

What are some good OD pedals that can get me that gritty sound not the stupid gainy distortion? The Behringer BOD doesn't seem to be doing it nor does the ODB3...
