I know this may be a dumb question but what makes rounds and flats sound different ? What is it that makes a string with a flat outer wrap sound different to a string with a round wrap ?

  2. I thought about asking that question before. Though I never did, because I sort of thought through it.

I think it's because roundwounds vibrate more freely, which allow the higher overtones to exist in the vibrating string. Flatwounds sort of restrict overtones in the strings, because wider, flat windings will obviously not allow smaller vibrations to occur in the string with as much freedom.
