What model is this Yamaha?

  1. Already posted this question but no answer.

Got this bass on CL for dirt cheap.

Looks like an RBX 170 but the pickups are different (see below). Also what type of pickups would you advise to put on this bass?

    Thanks!!!!!!!!!

  2. The model number is usually printed in pretty small letters on the back of the headstock.

    RBX270?

  3. looks like an rbx270 because of the black headstock.
the pickups may have been replaced

  4. looks like a 270......pickups look fairly stock too

  5. No model number behind the headstock, just a S/N ("HM" then 5 digits).

So for $100 with the Crate 15W, that was not too bad, then.

I was wondering about the pickups because with the 170, on Yamaha's site, you can see the tip of the magnets sticking out, while on this one they are covered.

Is there any sense upgrading these pickups?

This is my comeback bass, I intend to buy a Fender Jazz or Precision if I am still playing in 2 months.

  6. Only upgrade the pups if you either don't like the tone or you plan on having this bass stick around for a while. No point in putting money into somethign that won't be used.

yea a 270.... I had a 170 years ago I picked up for nothin, and it had a great setup on it and for the money it was a fantastic bass. Very confortable neck.

I had the same problem identifying my yamaha too...turns out the model # of my RBX-750a was printed in between where the fret board screws to the body...That's if you want to de-string the bass and take the neck off....

  9. Well I am not a big fan of the sound but that's maybe because of the amp being entry-level.

I am waiting for a cheap Pod or Pandora to show up on eBay or CL, as I'd like to start learning songs soon. So then I'll know if the pickups are toast.

What do you think of the Seymour Duncan SPB-3 and SJB-3?

The neck pickups are dual P-Bass but what about the bridge pickup?

So that I can look for other solutions, just in case.

I am good with a soldering iron :)
