Let's not turn this into a finger vs. pick debate. Personally, I use traditional finger, slap and pick styles depending on what the song needs. My go-to for picks has been the Dunlop Tortex .88mm Standard for quite some time. For those that use picks part-time or full-time, what do you use and why? Do you find that a pick sounds good on some basses and not on others?
Don't laugh but I play fingerstyle 80% and of course pick 20%....But I use the Tortex Red, a thin pick, but I don't use the tip, I use the rounded side...I found for my style I get a bit more speed....
not a pic guy either now but I started out with one so I still mess around sometimes and I like the yello tortex pic. I used to have a way of bending them around my thumb to give them a stiffer attack when I needed it
I've used the .88 green Tortex for years, but I recently picked up some .90 Ultex sharps and really dig them.
I also do not always use a pick, but when I do, I have a new favorite. the Dunlop with the rhinoceros on it. it has a slightly sharper point which I like. http://www.zzounds.com/item--DNP421
The Dunlop Tortex picks.. used to use the blue (1mm?), went down to the .88mm green, now I'm on the yellow .73mm. I could quite happily use any of them, and I'm not really sure why I keep moving onto the thinner size.
i did the same thing. started on the blue/purple tortex and ended up on the orange. i like the flexibility of it. gives me a bit cleaner/sharper attack and allows me to play faster.
Tortex purple. I think they are just super heavy gui**** picks, but I've always preferred them for bass.
Fender Heavy. Used Martin heavyset for decades, with a textured contour grip. Best ever. Of course, they're no longer available.
