I love this tone! I have a MIM Jazz bass, and I want to get this sound. I know I need some bright roundwounds (like Rotos). Are there any pickups that can help give me those nice lows, growly mids, and bite in the treble?

just good quality jazz pups ....

Seymour Duncan Antiquity or 60's Fender Jazz Pups .......anything good but not overly modern should get you what you want.

you'd have to study up on Geddy amp rig to go the distance with his tone ....but hey, he went direct on some of the 80's rush recordings as well i beleive.

  3. That song is Geddy's Jazz. I would personally get some Nordstrand NJ4's, nothing else nails that tone as well to me. Or you could probably find a set out of a Geddy Lee Jazz as well, lots of people change them. Those sound great too.

As someone who chased Geddy Lee's tone for a long time it's a lot more than just a bass and strings, amp settings and right hand attack are huge.

Okay, thanks! I like the sound of the 60's Jazz bass pickups, so I will consider those.

Okay, thanks! I know his technique is important as well for that sound. It's not my goal to sound just like Geddy. I just want the same growl and lows/highs/mids and such that he had, but not the exact the same sound. A sound like it, but my own sort of sound, if that makes any sense. Although I'd also like to emulate Geddy's tone as closely as possible for the fun of it.

Do you think the Nordstrand NJ4's would sound more like that tone with the 70's wind?
