I gleefully just picked up two 1976 Gibson G3 basses (bought one that needed to be restored, then looking for parts, found one in mint condition - lucky me). One happens to be fretless. I've had a ton of fun sliding around the great bass riff to the Beatles "Come Together." And playing Cream's Badge is pretty fun.

What are some other songs that are especially fun to play on a fretless bass?

Funny, I was reading this when Sunset Grill by Don Henry came on the radio. Very nice fretless work on that track.

I love playing, or at least attempting to play, both of the counterpoint basslines at once, using two-handed tappity and sliding. Sounds great sometimes, crap otherwise, but always fun to try!

    Gotta go with the classic:

Teen Town or Continuum so you can sound like Jaco for a tad instant.

Although it's really a keyboard bass line, try playing along Blue Wind by Jeff Beck on the Wired album.

I think this is a cool bass line and it does resemble a fretless Bass.

This is an excellent way to work on your vibrato if you can emulate the bass part.

Some of my favorite fretless jams to play along with:

    Birdland - Weather Report
Into The Gap - Thompson Twins
Everytime You Go Away - Paul Young
    The whole Graceland record
    Bad Day - Daniel Powter
Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) - Angelique Kidjo

And big band-era stuff like this:

I pretty much exclusively played my fretless for 2 years. 20 times at church, a couple 3 hour Modern country gigs, a few classic rock sessions, some metal recordings. What was most for for me was to make NOT sound like a fretless until I really wanted to bring out the mwah.

Boys of Summer on that album has some searing fretless work as well. Really, anything with Pino playing fretless on it is pretty awesome.

OP: the Henley album and Graceland by Paul Simon is pretty old as well, but is nothing but crazy, amazing fretless work.

What you'll find out if you keep at it is that you can play anything on fretless that you can on a fretted. Your life might get real interesting at that point.
