    Hi

Just bought a bass with '75 neck/tuners and unknown everything else for cheap.

Question 1: The body has a weird rot: what is this, and would you suggest throwing the body in the garbage, or is it usable?

Question 2: are these pickups fender pups?

    Thanks, Glenn.

Is that mojo gonna keep eating wood and eat my neck eventually?

It almost looks like somebody used a drill and a high wattage soldering iron to do a bit of woodworking :meh:

To me it looks like someone intentionally did most of the damage. It looks like there's some kind of drilling/routing problem that someone instigated. I don't know about the other stuff, but is it possible that it's been burned, etc? I would start by brushing out the space and cleaning it down. If it is some kind of fungal rot, then you should also be able to kill it by cleaning and treating it.

Does it look like enough damage that the neck might not be stable in there anymore?

    It still feels stable...

Looks like somebody got crazy with the drill or router and heated it up. Maybe tried to put a "mud-bucker" in there at one time..

Would you keep using a body like that, or would you consider it ruined?

well that really depends on what you wanna do with it...

if you clean everything out, fill it up(with wood and sand it flush with the rest) and give it a solid color, no it's no ruined...

if you leave it as is, well it's not ruined, but it isn't very pretty is it ? ;)

kinda depends: is this the only real damage the body has?

Did termites get to that body!?! Wow.

In all seriousness though, if the neck feels solid, and the botch "whatever" job was done to it can be covered with a pickguard, I'd most likely keep it and change it if/when it breaks completely.

I don't see a reason to spend money on a new body just yet if the current one seems to be working...

Looks like someone rammed a soldering iron into a router & went to town on that bad-boy.

I'd say the previous owner was attempting to add a Telecaster bass-style humbucker rout without a router or any sense of right and wrong. Or, super easy truss rod access.

My diagnosis is that it looks like a bad case of BlueCollaraTweakinitis.

Maybe you should play it safe and get rid of it...

I know how to deal with a bass like that... PM me and we'll talk... :D

Yeah, that's one of the side effects of extreme alcohol consumption. One of the signs of an impending bout of Tweakinitis may be the afflicted shouting "Hey, watch this."
