What tubes are these?

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by ImSquare17, Nov 26, 2005.

  1. Just won this on ebay, and was wondering if anyone might have a good guess as to what tubes might these be? Pretty sure they're not stock as the stock tubes on pignose's site have black at the bottom rather than the orange/brown. Svetlanas? That'd be sweet. Also, what tubes would you reccomend for this amp? I was thinking a matched quad of Electro Harmonix's 6L6EH's and a matched pair of Ei Elites 12AX7EG's from tubedepot.com. Looking for that smooth warm rock and roll tubey sound, would this be a good tube setup? Anyways, any input is welcome, thanks!

Full disclosure, I'm a certified Fender technician working in a music store that carries Fender, Yamaha, and Ibanez products among others.
They look like Groove Tubes to me, but since GT re-brands tubes from factories world-wide, that could mean anything.

  3. lol, well, at least their not stock right? From what I've heard pignose's stock tubes are some of the worste around.

Well, actually, GT doesn't sell junk. That's the whole point, they buy tubes, test the snot out of them, and sell them at a higher price. They even quantify them, so if you like one set you can order tubes that'll give you the same response later, which is invaluable.

And yes, almost all stock tubes suck, not just Pignose stock tubes. It's one place where amp manufacturers always try to save a few bucks.

Nice little amp! Let me know how you like it. I have the combo version, and I replaced the stock (Chinese?) power tubes with Svetlana's (can't tell what you have from that photo, though) and preamp tubes with Sovteks (yes, Sovteks!, and this is probably the only such tube rolling I've done where I preferred the Sovteks, to be honest).

    Take care, Tom.

  6. Interesting that you chose the sovteks, I wonder could you tell me all (or some) of the different tubes you tried out for the pre's and powers? Also what kind of sound do you get from that setup? thanks!

I didn't try any NOS stuff, but I tried JJ's and EH's, and I felt that the Sovtek's did the best job of thickening up the tone (which I felt it needed). The Svetlana's just improved darn near everything (detail, punch, dynamics, clarity, aparent volume, etc.). The overall sound is not one that I would want to play much 5-string through (but I think that this is partly due to the driver), but it has a nice warm, punchy tone. Pretty nice, really.

  8. Very cool, I can't wait to recieve mine! It'll be my first all tube amp! interesting, all sorts of new things to mess with!

Those sovteks wouldn't have been the 12AX7WB's would they?
