just got done sanding the face of this lotus p body. its definately an ugly chunk of wood, but can anyone tell what type of wood it is? with the finish still on the sides and back it weighs 6.5 lbs.
It looks like a veneer to me too. You really can't tell until you remove the finish from part of the side somewhere so you can see if there's endgrain or layers of veneers or a bunch of glue and sawdust.
By that picture and the weight, I'd guess basswood. Nice wood, but it's soft and will strip out easily if you turn the screws too much or have too large a hole to begin with. It might be agathis, don't know what that looks like.
poplar wood be fine with me. i was thinking of finishing this with a trans green stain, and using one of the $25 maple necks from sx. should look and sound decent for what i've got in it.
its not Poplar I can tell you that. Since poplar doesnt have any branches or limbs in the trunk until closer to the top there wont be knots or thicker grain patterns. Poplar tends to be a straight grained and has even textures this has big wavy grain patterns. There is literally 1000s of things it could be. But I dont think its poplar. This is more of what poplar looks like
I worked as a woodworker in an architectural millwork shop for eight months back in 1987, and I gotta tell you, I never saw a piece of poplar that was as pristinely uniform as that sample portrayed above! However, I also looked at the OPs photos from post #1 again on a different computer monitor, and now I'm not so sure it's poplar. Not sure what it is... Maybe it's cheesewood!
Liriodendron tulipifera, it definitely looks like yellow poplar. Especially if it has a green tint. I use the stuff almost everyday.
it's what I thought first, but this bass kind of green stripes which reminded me of some poplar bass. Still could be a cheap alder piece.
