Anyone know what type of wood this body is made of? I just bought this used Carvin SB4000 and it has a satin or tung oil body finish. Maybe walnut or alder? Thanks for the help!
I would guess alder. Could be poplar but poplar usually has a green tint to it, not conducive to staining. Either way its a pretty bass.
This isn't entirely true, I was a trim carpenter for about 15 years in Des Moines, IA and we did many many houses with poplar as a substitute for cherry. The grain pattern under the typical dark cherry stain is very close in appearance. It doesn't however darken over time, or at least nearly as fast, as cherry does. You can however do an entirely library out of poplar for the cost of a couple cabinets in cherry.
Carvin doesn't offer poplar as a body wood option. It could be alder with a stain, but it doesn't look like any of their stain finish options. Could be a custom color on alder, or walnut.
I wished that I still had my Carvin BB75, one too many strings for me though. I still don't know what I was thinking. I hope you got a good deal, very nice bass.
This looks like it's stained Mexican burl lacewood from the forests of southern Sri Lanka but this piece of wood looks unique in that due to a natural deformity, the burls and laces have been straightened to form a once-in-a-lifetime mellow and straight-grain pattern. .....or it could be walnut or alder.
Thanks all for the input. I have been looking at some different examples of walnut and it is close, but different. Looks closer to a walnut than alder.
