What volume setting should I use

You say you have two 8 ohm speakers and are using both. That would make the combined rating 4 ohm.

There is no formula that'll give you a set point for the volume. It's a combination of things, and knowing your gear helps to make an informed decision. Your speakers could be rated at 600 watts, but you could still blow them out if you turn your bass eq, up full, on the amp, though I don't know why you would do that, there may be a reason, as long as you know the possible outcome, it's up to you. You need to become aware of your gear limitations and gain confidence. Use your ears. Notice differences and changes. If you're not sure, don't take chances, ask questions and understand the answers.

Tough crowd here today / baptism by fire....

This is the spec that is throwing us off - especially the last "x4", so more information would be helpful. (i.e. what amp you're using)

The 450x2 part, and your comment that you're running in stereo mode is relevant (but not sure how the last x4 comes into play. )

Assuming this is a stereo amp, you are running an 8 ohm load on each of the 2 internal amps.
Typically, I would assume the 450 watts is spec'd is at 4 ohms, (for each amp) and likely closer to half of that at 8 ohms ~225 watts.

If those assumptions are correct, you shouldn't be at risk at pushing the cabs beyond their power rating. (as long as you don't drive the amp significantly beyond its limits.)

How / where you set the volume is a separate issue, and there is no correct answer we can give you for this - i.e. "7" - there are just too many variables, and each amp has a different "taper" to it's level controls.

You have to let your ears be your guide; obviously, no more than the volume required for the situation, and if you start pushing some "real volume" you have to be alert to when you start driving the amp/speakers beyond its limits.

I have an amplifier that is power rated at 450x2x4 at 8 ohms. I'm only using 2 speakers one per output in stereo mode. My speakers are rated for 400w at 8 ohms. What volume setting on the amplifier should I set it at?
I’m not a fan of having more wattage that a cab’s rating, which you will have, even at a much lower volume. You may not hear or notice when damage to your speakers is happening. If if you do trash them, it is a very expensive repair you don’t want to have to deal with.

I don't know what volume setting you should use, but I do know what mood setting you should use...
