The first song I learned was Wild Thing by the Troggs. This was followed very closely by Wipeout (by Surfias?). Yesterday, I learned When I Come Around by Green Day. I'm digging it because, I don't typically do any hammer ons/pull offs. But it's been a great starter exercise for me in that.
Rock around the clock, Johnny B. Goode, Whole lotta shakin' goin' on, Kansas City, Dizzy Miss Lizzy, Money (That's what I want), Bad Boy, Matchbox, Stormy Monday, Boom boom boom boom, Rock n' Roll Music and about a thousand others - all at once! Actually, I learned that Generic I-IV-V7 blues/rock progression.
You don't know Sultans of Swing?? That song was huge! You just don't remember it. If it's any consolation, out of the eleven originals, I only know these three.
First songs I learned to play were: "We Gotta Get Out of This Place" - Animals "Honky Tonk Woman" - Stones "Blister in the Sun" - Violent Femmes
the first thing I taught myself was AC/DC's "Dirty Deeds". the first tune I was taught: "Hungry Like the Wolf" by Duran Duran. my teacher didn't want me to lock myself into one style, so he made me learn a blatant pop tune. there isn't a day that goes by that I don't thank him for instilling the value of an open mind in me.
