Can't remember, and not sure what counts as playing bass, prob 10 or so. But first paying gig I was 16 so 1984. Wasn't much but still.
I started playing the guitar in 1969 and had a brief, abortive flirtation with the bass a few years later. It didn't last, and I didn't start playing bass in earnest until about 1994ish.
In 1966 as a 16 year old guitar player sitting in with a band while staying at a camping park with my family. The singer found it hard to sing and play tunes like Midnight Hour well, so I offered to play so she could stretch out and give the song it's due. I ended up playing a few other tunes with them too. I loved it but I didn't switch from guitar to bass as my main instrument until 1973.
1970 at 15 on a borrowed bass, 1971 before I had my own bass.

not so easy...Guitar lessons began around 1963 at 8 years old. Bass/band around 1967 by removing all but EADG strings. First real bass guitar was 69/70.
