What's a good bass for rock, punk, reggae, and jazz under $1000?

I've been playing for a little over a year now and want to get my second bass. I have an Ibanez GSR 200 w/ EMG's right now and am looking for something a little higher quality. What is a good bass for rock, punk, reggae, and jazz for under $1000? Any recommendations will be appreciated.

A used Fender Jazz and I mean "MIA." The older, the better.

I would have chosen Precision, but you mentioned jazz. I was a little shaky on the punk critierium with the Jazz, but a badass amp like an SVT or a big SWR will usually get you through any punk gig.

If my suggestion seems too cliched and obvious, well, as they say, "nothing succeeds like success." (And I've never owned one, but I have used them a lot).

Believe it or not I've had great luck & skill with Conklin's Groove Tool line. The 4 is approx $600. The pickups leave a little to be desired but the woods you get for $600 are unbeatable. 5pc. Wenge/Purpleheart neck, swamp ash body w/curly maple cap. They seem to play great.
