What's causing this distortion?

    The EQ in my new (to me) ESP LTD B-1005SE is generating some kind of noise/distortion, even with a fresh battery. It's much less pronounced in passive mode. I don't hear the distortion when playing another bass through the same signal chain.

    Hear it here or attached: Bass electronics troubleshooting - Clyp

    * 0:00 flat eq
    * 0:05 turned up bass knob
    * 0:17 switched to passive
    * 0:30 different bass, same signal chain

    Spectrum analysis

    Does this sound like a familiar problem to you? What should I do about it?
