The background music in the Carnival Cruises ad which aired tonight during "American Idol" is "Beyond the Sea." The best known version of this song is Bobby Darin's version made famous in the early sixties. Versions of this song do go back to the forties when big bands used to play it. I don't know the original performer or composer.

Incidentally, that same song is the title of Bobby Darin's biographical movie starring Kevin Spacey as Darin. He does an incredible job and was nominated for a Golden Globe for this role, but did not win. The movie is still in theaters. If you like "Beyond the Sea", you would probably also like Darin's swinging version of "Mack the Knife." In fact, you might also enjoy the soundtrack to the movie.

Current singers who have a similar style are Michael Buble and Matt Dusk.
