I stopped at a yard sale yesterday and asked the seller if he had any used instruments. He told me that he had just sold an instrument for $500. After the sale, the buyer came back and showed him documentation that the instrument was worth over $20,000! It's one thing to take advantage of someone but to go back and rub it in?
I used to know a stoner kid back in the early 90's. His mom was dead, and his dad gave him a buttload of money at the beginning of every month. He'd blow it on guitars, basses, amps, and a lot of pot. By the second week of the month he was selling off things to pay bills. He needed 5 bucks for gas money to bring his 2 week old crate full stack to a music shop to try to sell it. Afterwards I asked him when I was getting my 5 bucks back. He gave me his 2 week old ibanez exb 504 (the one my wife plays now) and a gig bag in lieu of the 5 dollars!!! about 8 or 9 years later he show's up at a party I'm playing at, and tells me he misses it and wants it back! what a dumbass
I was working in a music store in 1987... A guy was in with a '72 P bass, wanting $400 for it, the store wanted nothing to do with it. I told him it was just an old used Fender, which it was at the time, and told him $250. Well, that bass has been my main instrument for quite some time and has appreciated a tad...
Hard to say which was the absolute best deal. Traded a 78 Precision (it was just a 5 year old used bass when I bought it) and a refinished Jazz master guitar straight up for my 64 Precision may years ago. $500 for a brand new Epi Jack Casady when the typical street price was $700. $800 for a brand new 08 American Standard Precision, typical street price $1100. I see stuff selling used for more than I paid for those new. Gigged the hell out of a $109 SX for over 3 years with just a few minor mods. Kind of hard to beat that deal. More shows than I can remember using that one. Yeah, that was probably the best deal, although I actually paid asking price for that one.
I guess the best deals I've gotten was $80 for a Peavey T-20 and a Yamaha short scale sg/eb-0 copy for free from my guitar class teacher. They were pretty beat up but I've refinished both.
A 1962 Fender 3 knob sun burst jazz wrapped in a sleeping bag for $35.00. It was in 1969 & the going rate used was probably only $125 to $150.Believe it or not it didn't sound that great, good but not great. It played nice though. Sure wish I had it now!
Got a Warwick Rockbass Streamer for $25 at a yard sale, I'm pretty sure the retail is about $700-800 on the newer ones
my first "real" bass was a late 90's american p/j bass. best sounding fender i ever had. got it for $600..ended up selling it when i got real into 6 string, about 2 years after getting so into 6 strings i started seriously regretting selling that thing.. thinking about buying a used OLP stingray ripoff for $160..i guess thats not a bad deal either? any working bass for that much is a nice deal..
