What's the best hat for playing bass?

Discussion in 'Bass Humor & Gig Stories [BG]' started by LowStringNinja, Mar 11, 2016.

  1. I've been through a lot of hats...more hats than even basses...

Fedoras, top hats, floppy fishing caps, beanies & nit caps...
...but when the singer for this bizarre project (who is pushing 60, by the way) is dressing up mannequins
and putting on fishnet stockings (no, not on his mannequins) in preparation for this gig/show/whatever
that's happening in a few weeks in some downtown art studio for a charity event (so, a real 'Andy Warhol'
type crowd is all I can really come up with)..and we're playing songs by bands I've never heard of from
throughout the five decades with the exception of Iggy Pop, Sisters of Mercy, Social Distortion, and
    Joy Division...
...and turning 40 myself just two days later, I cannot help but to anticipate facing my own utter mortality..
..and asking myself, perhaps, for really the first time ever...
"What type of hat truly defines me as an artist?"

These are the ones I'm currently using. They really help keep the groove in line.

  5. No hat. Bassists wearing hats are the most terrible cliche in all of music. Unless you are Vic Wooten - that dude can get away with it. If you are in a cover band (as I am) and wear a hat (I don't) you are 99.99% likely to look goofy.

  7. Depends on the genre...

    Ska: Pork Pie
Reggae: knit cap, green, yellow, red & black
    Country: Cowboy
    Mariachi: Sombrero (duh)
    Classic Rock: Top
    Southern Rock: Gambler
    Dixieland: Straw Boater
    Jazz: Beret
Blues: British Driver or Billy Jack (SRV)
    Funk: Big, bright & furry
Hip Hop: Baseball, stiff oversized brim (backwards, tag on)
    Metal/hard rock: German WWII Officer
Latin/Conga: A large pile of fruit
    Sea Chantis: Pirate
    Lounge: carrots

Of course, lots of exceptions to the rule... Like the sea urchin Billy Gibbons seems to pull off and Rick Neilson's beanie. Frank Soda's roman candle hat was always fun.

I lean towards a Derby myself.

Oh no wait!!!! Those hats that hold a beer can with a straw conveniently located at mouth level?? Yeah! Yeah!! That would unquestionably be the best hat for playing bass.

Better than bald in most situations I'd wager.

I'm not there yet but I will be eventually and I still plan on rockin.:bag: ;)
  12. Hmm. I'd still say bald >hat for most

This is a good question! Since i have a weird "Anti mohawk" I go wit ha brown sort of weird unspecified hat type most times. Or sometimes a variation on what looks like a German type scouting hat.

A hat has been a part of my daily wardrobe for most of my life. However, with a few exceptions, I don't wear one onstage except when playing outside.
