..if i want to nail the vintage P tone with a newish P.
i want to be tactful on an internet forum, but that just ain´t gonna happen is it...
I've heard great things about the Fralin P, but haven't tried one. The best one I've tried for the sound you describe is the Nordstrand P.
Fender RI 62 are pretty good at this game. So are Duncan Antiquity. There is more than PUs to vintage though.
Fralin ive heard are amazing.
im pretty sure its the P sound im after because 98% of the bass lines that I love came from them.
May I also suggest a good set of flatwound strings to go with that Nordstrand P? I use TI jazz flats. They sound great with this pickup IMHO.
