What's the best place for improvised jazz/funk/soul based music?

Discussion in 'Miscellaneous [BG]' started by alexssandro, Oct 4, 2000.

  1. My simple question is, what is the music scene like in Houston or Austin as far as funk and jazz are concerned. I ask because my girlfriend’s family is based there, so I’m entertaining the idea that perhaps one day I might end up down there. I just wanted to know if there were also musical incentives on my part that might make me gung-ho about relocating. To sum it up real quick, I’m into the Aquarium Rescue Unit, the Flecktones, Jamiroquai, James Brown type of funk, funky Benson, Grant Green, etc. But really, I’m into anything that grooves and has an anything goes at any time kind of attitude with room for improv. Maybe I haven’t looked hard enough here in Southern California, but the awareness for this type of music seems to be quite limited around here. As far as New York is concerned, I get the impression that they have everything. To ask another question, what is the ultimate city for the kind of music I described? Thanks everyone.
