We have all got at least one piece of gear that we got for a steal of a price. The deal that was so good that all of your buddies are pissed that they didnt find it first. I wanna here what yours is.
Ive gotten three that i am proud of. First i got a 1969 ampeg b25b head with an old sunn 2x15 cab in great working order for $125 . Thought i would never find another deal like that but then a boss of mine at a welding job said that he had an old 70s epiphone project bass he wondered if i was interested in... and yes i was. It was a 1962 epiphone newport bass all original that i paid $65 for! It was dirty but that was it. And last i just got a 1967 sunn spectrum head in nice working condition with a 60s sears silvertone 1x15 cab, a 1979 t60 guitar, a 70s ibanez ric copy and a couple of parts basses and pedals for $300! All my years of searching craigslist are paying off.
But im still bitter about the fact that my guitarist bought an all original mid 60s ebo for $240 . The kid was in a metal band and didnt think that the gibson was a good bass(probably because he would tune to c with a short scale and the strings were just flabbing around). My buddie said he would pay $250 for it and when the kid brought it over it didnt have a strap so he took $240 for it. Couldnt believe it!

Alembic Series 1, $500.00 from a pawn shop in Mobile, Alabama, back in 1985. Their new price, back then, was $3000.00.

An Alembic series 1 for $500 from any decade makes me cry.

Mine is a Rickenbacker 3001 for $120 in '87 or so, from Guitar Center. Had no idea it was any good back then...
  5. Eden 15" for $100 at a flea market.
Musicman Sub for $280 on CL.
I could name some deals I got back in the day, but it doesnt seem fair to quote pre-ebay finds. Though my Mesa Bass 400 was $550.

I had a guy GIVE me a Gibson EB3 in the late '80's. Was during one of my first ever paying gigs with a cover band. I quickly traded it in on the Modulus Q5 I had on layaway!

I got a German made Warwick Vampyre NT that will easily run you $8999 brand new for $4999. To make a long story short. I ordered a Vampyre SN5 for $4999. I get a call from Warwick saying someone in Canada made a Deposit on an NT5 and never paid the second half of it and they were like "would you like this instead?", to which I responded "**** YEAH ****!!!!!". So basically I paid $4999 for a brand new bass that normally costs $8999. That's pretty good. Same color I wanted and everything.

No super great deals, but I got a 1987 Yamaha RBX-5 for $210. Also got a 1983 MIJ Ibanez Destroyer bass for $275. The best has to be the 1991 G&L L-5000 rarebird I got for $700.

My dad got a used 1970 Gibson A-5 mandolin in the 70's for $200.

Paid $475 for short scale Alembic Series I in the middle back in the late '90s. It was a 1974, serial number 84. For reference, Stanley Clarke's "School Days" bass was serial number 80. It needed TLC, so I kept it for a few years, restored it back to original and eventually sold it. Still have the other two, though.

Actually, I probably should mention my "almost free" Bongo 5.

Went to GC for a Memorial Day pre-opening valued customers event. They opened an hour early for valued customers, invitation only. I went to pick up a drum machine. As I walked in, I saw a blue Bongo 5 listed for $899. Brand new. I didn't need another bass, but I grabbed it anyway, because they're normally around $1,300 - 1,500.

If purchased with the GC card, it was no payments, no interest for 18 months. I paid it off in full after 17 months and then sold it for $875. So basically, I had a new Music Man Bongo for 18 months and it cost me $24.
