i'v never really been sure theres a compaby called Cort and they make curbows, then theres a company called Curbow, who also make curbows someone please explain cheers *Si*
so in effect theres 2/3 companies making the same bass......not forgeting the F-bass that looks like that...THATS SILLY!.........ooops, sorry fender lovers *Si*
Now you understand why Curbow & Conklin owners who paid 2500+ for their basses were upset when that happened. BTW, Tanglewood in the UK also makes the Curbow basses. I think they're a part of Cort.
yeah i know...i almost brough a 'Tanglewood Curbow' a couple of years back....it kinda sucked, but the finish was so cool! glad i didn't get it now! *Si*
Actually, that's entirely untrue. I know quite a few people who are extremely pleased with their Cort Curbows. I know Luis has two of them and can't say enough good things about them. Also, as far as the body style--while it is similar to the xt-33 body style, it is, in fact, it's own body shape. Not only have I played every Curbow body style, I have even played the prototype for the Cort/Tanglewood line. So, to be clear, there is only one person making Curbow basses, and that is Greg Curbow. I would hardly call him a company. Cort makes a bass designed by Greg Curbow. As anyone who has played both Corts, and Curbows (or Groove Tools and Conklins, for that matter) wil tell you--there is no comparison. I think the Cort basses are good for the money. I was certainly not "upset" when the line was introduced. You will never mistake my 5 string rockwood/purpleheart/lacewood petite for a Cort. And, anyone who would mistake a custom Curbow for a Cort, and vice versa...well...I simply wouldn't worry about someone who couldn't tell the difference.
yeah, what he said...i just recently got a curbow rockwood 6, and it's already been mistaken for a cort. the corts are good basses, but i just had to shake my head. i've played some corts, and there is just no comparison,
Wow, your bass is ALL rockwood? 6 string, right? I like this purple all rockwood bass: The all rockwood basses are heavy. But, they sound very angry.
Yeah, it is a shame that Greg gave the name to Cort. The cort basses aren't bad for under $500, but the hand made Curbow basses are great. FYI - I'm selling my '92 Curbow (not Cort) prototype bass. It's got a mohogany body, maple neck, 26 fret rosewood board, MOP inlays, Bart P/Js, Bart. EZQ Preamp. I'm asking $750/bo. I've attached a picture. Cheers, Dan
yup...all rockwood...and, man....it is awesome! i'll have to bring it the next time i'm in atlanta...i tried to get there last week, but i didn't get a chance...visiting the family and all...i'll have to post another pic of it.
I purchased a Cort Curbow a few months ago (only because it was $200 - and I could not walk out of the store w/o it). I imagine the original Curbow is built better (and probably sounds better), but the Cort I purchased sounds fantastic. I changed the tuning over to CGDAE; it really cuts through.
OBP, did you see the Curbow 4 that was at Atomic last week? Kind of a Gold to greenburst, quilted Maple, green neck with big Abalone block inlays, beige hardware Definitely made a strong statement. For me it was kind of like the Linc Luthier experience, wasn't really crazy about the look but the sound and playability of the Linc was ridiculously nice. Anyway, I plugged it (the Petite) in and it just floored me. After reconsidering I went back yesterday... and it was gone. So guess what I'm looking for?
I have a bunch of pics of that bass. If photopoint ever comes back up, I'll post some. It is definitely interesting looking. It always reminded me of a reptile. I like it.
I did the same thing - I saw the 5 and decided to try it out - amazing. I put it down and played about 5-6 other basses (at Atomic, of course) just to see how it measured up. I wound up going back an playing it again. Then I put it back on the rack and waked around the store for 30 minutes trying to think of a reason to leave it - I couldn't, so I walked out with it. $225 total. I just laid down a couple of bass solo tracks with it this weekend. The engineer loved the bass, went nuts when he found out how much I paid for it. Let me know when you head down to Atomic again, and I'll bring it.
onebassplayer, I'm plan to get a Cort Curbow 5 too. How stable is the neck ? And what is the nut material ? thanks
Actually, embellisher, I think onebassplayer bought a CORT Curbow 5 for $225, but Brad saw a real Curbow(Petite)4 at Atomic, but didn't have a chance to buy it, the next day it was gone. I could be wrong though....
