    type of control setup

Passive Pickups/Controls - Vol/Tone/Blend/etc , no power sources need to work
Passive Pickups/Active Controls - adds bass/treble/mids, need a 9 volt for the controls, but preamp can be bypassed
Active Pickups/Passive Controls - the pickups have an internal preamp which require power, Vol/Tone/Blend/etc
Active Pickups/Controls - pickups have internal preamp and the passive bypassing is not an option.

That is how i understand it

  3. wow...thats a lot to remember!

keep in mind Passive/Passive are the most common (Jazz or P)

Next are Passive/Active (Some warwicks, Ibanez, custom builders)

Active pickups are very rare in comparsion to passive. Real EMG's are active, and so are the VFL pickups in the Peavey Cirrus I think. Those are the only kinds that I can think of right now.
