atleast, i dont think its a synth.

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=xEcsbcpNrAQ&feature=related

my only guess is that it might be a whammy pedal at 2 octaves up. i used to be convinced he used a midi pickup with a v-bass or something for this violin-like sound, but my band opened up for these guys last weekend and low and behold, no midi pickup on that fender..

could it be the red guitar whammy? some kind of octave up madness?

100% synth. Notice how the attack of the note is slow, and delayed behind his finger movement on the fretboard? He's almost certainly using some device which takes the signal of his bass and converts the voltage and frequency levels of it into control voltages or control data for triggering the synth. There are both analog and digital devices/systems which can do this. It could be a Whammy but the attack is just so slow that I doubt it, unless it's in conjunction with another device that alters the envelope.

i did notice this..but the times ive used the red guitar whammy on bass, it has that same slow attack thing going on. also in that 2nd link you can see he hits a G harmonic and then brings it up 2 octaves. can we tell weather its a bass or guitar whammy..?

If your band opened up for them, you should've just asked the guy! :ninja:

  7. Bongo, it looked to me like he was controlling some sort of expression pedal. Did my eyes mislead me?

I didn't watch the whole thing... :ninja: Anyway I haven't used the guitar Whammy, and was not aware of the slow attack. So I was probably mistaken.

If you look later in the video you can see his foot perched on a volume pedal. ;)

If he wanted a violin why didn't he just buy one.

  11. I'm voting volume pedal > whammy.

Probably because it's a completely different instrument than the one he's spent years learning to play as well as he does? Maybe?

I couldn't watch his faces long enough to form an opinion. :)

I think it could be a whammy, but he is using a volume pedal with it.

I think it sounds too sweet (candy type of sweet) to be a whammy, but that could be fixed with EQing, and I do hear some of the whammy brand glitchyness

Urrrghh had to stop watching after 3minutes. That guy looked like he was about to jizz all over his bass.

  17. Oh please. You didn't like the tone; that much is obvious, but you can't deny he's a hell of a player. If he'd been playing in bass register, you'd be all over it.

    um...no.
Watched it again because maybe I missed something.

    I didn't.

I don't even consider him mediocre, nevermind a "hell of a player".
To each his own though, right?
sorry man, I hear nothing but noise coming from every instrument in that vid.

The pianist has a hell of a left hand though.

I think its a whammy and reverse delay.
