What's with the Scrunchie's??

    Why do some bassists (e.g victor wooten) put scrunchies behind the nut on the headstock of their basses? Does this eliminate some kind of false tone or something? I cant see it being tight enough to increase string tension significantly, although I haven't tried it, so I can't say that for sure. Just curious... :confused:

    If you ever get a chance to see Wooten's "Bass Extremes" video, he describes the whole scrunchie thing. He uses them, as said before, to dampen the other strings while he's playing chords or harmonics or what have you. He also describes how you can move the scrunchie along the neck with your thumb. If you can put up with Steve Bailey's sense of humor (which mainly involves ripping on Wooten), it's good video to watch.
