...they don't have Fender pickups. I recently threw away the mini humbucker and mudbucker on my Epiphone rivoli II, routed mid poisition for a P pickup and fitted it. I filled in the old Gibson holes with poly filler, and refinished the top. The bass now plays well, sound glorious and looks evil!!! A recommended mod!
Subscribing for pics! And yes, I'd hate to say it, but the world is too used to the sound of Fender designed pickups.
Here are some lousy pics...best I can do in low light with a cheap webcam. I'll take some proper ones sometime. But you can see the quality of the refinishing work.
Nice job, and a very cool bass. If Gibson had done something like that back in 1960-whatever, used a slightly longer scale, and designed better bridges, IMO, they would have owned a much bigger share of the bass market.
Well, it still has that kludgy bridge. I owned one way back when and it was always a problem for me....
Andy, I must say that you did an excellent job on that bass! Those pickups look like they were always there! And you can't tell where the originals were. A big thumbs up! Mike
Mike, I realise I have unintentionally misled the board. I had the work done. I didn't do it myself! The routing and refinishing were done by Kenan Turgut, the excellent Ankara guitar and bass repairer and builder. I did, however, personally throw away the epi pickups. Sloppy phrasing. I apologise. Kenan says that there may be some subsidence in time if the poly shrinks, but I have seen his work over the past decade and it rarely happens.
