What's wrong with my bass?

I've isolated the problem to my bass (it's not the preamp or the soundcard). Here's what's wrong with it:
    a) It sounds thin
    b) It sounds really distorted
    c) There's a huge DC offset

So what's wrong with it, and will it be a cheap repair job?

It had a a very hard childhood. When it was a mere sapling in the forest, all the bigger trees robbed it of sunlight and nourishment. Then as an adolescent, it had a serious skin problem that the other trees made fun of.

OK, if that's not right, I guess we need more information about your bass to diagnose. :)

+1 to what kind of bass?

If you fill out your profile, we can look there, otherwise we have no way of knowing what you are dealing with.

Also, Mr. Westbrook's answer might have something to do with it as well.
