Wondering if any micro heads have exceptionally nice DI's, particularly for recording. I'd expect a TecAmp, a Thunderfunk, or a Glock would probably be pretty good. Is there anything that competes with a Reddi or Avalon? ...I'm thinking the new 1,200 JGR class D would be good, but they aren't even hen's teeth yet.
... Guess the Monique combo could get here too. I wish the EQ had a bit more range; I couldn't get it to play well with my Barefaced cabs, but it certainly recorded nicely going direct.
An amp with a DI that competes with a REDDI in the studio? Maybe the Monique/Demeter.....but with that transformer it's not exactly "micro". What kind of sound are you looking for exactly? When you say "Reddi or Avalon" you're kinda talking apples and oranges.
I was curious about general "quality" of sound, but not a specific tone profile. I get that a Reddi is different from an Avalon, but they are each held in high regard. Does that make sense? That's why I wanted "favorites" and not "best" or a specific sound. It is a more academic than purchase driven question, trying to get a sense of how big a gap there is between studio DI's and micro pre's.
Yep that makes sense. It's a tough one though since amp makers doing production class D heads are driven to hit a price point. A J48 quality DI maybe but a REDDI or Avalon? The Monique 700 is all I can think of that's in that league. Be interesting to see if there are any others. We gotta be talking boutique.....
TC electronic seems to have very good ones. I've had a few compliments on the signal from house sound men and read good reviews from others online. We've move to practicing all in ears so all my sound is coming from my RH450 DI. Sounds great.
I've used the Aguilar and Genz Benz DI's and they're more than good enough for live applications but in his post the OP is asking about exceptional DI's. I have yet to use, hear or even hear of a production model head with anything better than a JDI/J48 quality DI.
There was a great thread recently extolling the virtues of the Sonic Farm 2DI4 DI box. The discussion made it sound good enough that I made a note of it for a potential future purchase. Raf
Probably not in the league you are looking at - but the DI's in both my GK MB200 and MB500 Fusion sound great for live use.
There are some decent DIs on some of the micros. However...With that being said. Do not expect REDDI tone with a micro DI. Its not going to happen. My Micro DI out choice if its a choice of Micros Thats easy MB Fusion hands down.
Phil Jones D-600. Same DI as the PJB Bass Buddy (and PJB Super Flightcase), which is every bit as good as the Avalon, IME. In fact, it has a thicker, more natural midrange than the Avalon, which has a mid-range dip built in.
