What's your favorite wood?

  1. I'm thinking of building a bass. What do you think would be the cheapest and best wood to make the body out of?

You could probably find Alder fairly cheap. Or maybe some Swamp Ash. You may wanna check out Gilmer Wood for body blanks. They've got good prices and selection.

For cheap? Alder. Poplar would be OK too.

You got to think of the finish. If it's going to be solid painted color then you can't beat the bang-for-the-buck that Poplar offers. If it's going to be a clear finish then swamp ash can be really beautiful and it's not super expensive. Alder is good, too, but is not really that beautiful to look at on a clear color or oiled bass.

Claro Walnut or Bubinga over Swamp Ash with flat-sawn Rock Maple neck & Wenge or Ebony fingerboard.
