My first bass was a Peave Foundation at age 16
Second Fender American Jazz around 23
    Ernie ball sterling 26

and today at 34, several Sadowsky's an MTD and a Modulus.
Untill I got a decent job I could afford the luxury of having dream gear.
  2. Squire P-Bass at age 15
    MIM Jazz-16
    Squire P-Bass- 17
    MIA Jazz V- 18
    Washburn Taurus 5-18

    19 - MIJ jazz
    20 - MIM jazz 5
    21 - MIJ mustang
    22 - MIK Precision
22 - MIA Mustang bits bass (which the tech/assembly guy lost bits for/ screwed up the $1200 I'd spent on the bloody thing...!!!)
22 - MIE (england) Fretless Precision (clone - bits bought on ebay...probably IS Fender MIM/MIK/MIC/MII or some other (squier) version... - pretty damn good shape body if its fake)

...7 basses in 5 years...realistically I'm set for life though!

    13 - Squier Strat
    15 - Epi les paul
    16 - "challenge" Rickenbacker 330
    16/17 - Squier Tele
17 - Epi Del Ray (LOVELY PRS copies if you can find them now...)

Thats it...I'm a bassist now... (some guitarists ask me "how come you've got that Rickenbacker if your a bassist? - thats a GUITAR! I SHOULD HAVE THAT!" - I just reply "I went through 6 years of wanting one - it was either that or a party on my 18th...which would you have chosen?"

1st bass was a Guild EB3 lookalike with medium scale. Pretty crappy bass, but OK to learn on.

2nd bass was my 1st real bass: '78 Fender Precision (bought used in '79 or so)

I played fours for 20 more years, then switched to five string in Y2K and never looked back. I currently play Fender and Sadowsky five stringers.
