I really love the way the newer Standard Mexican Precision basses sound, so I went looking to buy a new Mexican P bass pickup. I found one cheap on ebay, but when it arrived I realized it was only one coil. It was to replace one that went bad.

So now I still need a treble side of the pickup, but I can't find where to buy one. Stratosphere has the worst search function in the history of the internet, as a side note.

    1. Flag eBay, and report the seller, assuming he advertised the whole pickup.
    2. Just buy a whole new pickup. Scan the classifieds here. Good stuff for good prices from good people.

The weird thing is, this half a pickup is packaged Fender product. It's a "genuine fender part"I'm just not sure where I could find another. It's labeled

"PICKUP ASSY RHYTHM STD PB MEX"

  4. Can you post a photo of the pickup?

  5. Maybe I'm dense, but I've never heard of half a p bass pickup. I didn't know you could purchase half. I don't know a situation where that would even be necessary.

    You can't.
    OP got fleeced.
Fender has never and will never sell just one coil.
    Sucks, but there she is.

  7. That's what I thought, but for the OP's sake, I was hoping I was wrong.

The bag is small, it would barely hold a second coil. The possibility of a single coil going bad is for real, and you could fix it with a new single coil. I may have been scammed, though:

Yeah, I could be wrong, but I've never known Fender to sell pickups in bags. They usually have boxes.
    Hmmm...

  10. The way I see if you've got two options:

get another complete set of pickups

    find a bridge with really narrow string-spacing & go 100% single-coil
    :D

Looks like this might be legit ... I find several references online to that part number as the "neck" component of the MIM Precision pickup, along with 0058263000 as the "bridge" component. Here's a pdf with the parts labeled on a diagram:

Wow... who knew? I had no idea that they'd even consider selling the individual halves of a P pickup but there it is in black and white. I guess this has never come up since it seems a bit rare that someone would actually buy a MIM pickup, those usually get ripped out in favor of an upgrade.

Well. You learn something new every day. I’ve worked for four Fender dealers and never knew that you could buy half a Precision pickup. At any rate, OP, odds of you finding the other half are pretty minimal and if you do it probably won’t be cheap. Bite the bullet and get yourself an entire P pickup. The whole thing this time. It should not be terribly expensive.

Chances are , on the pickup that went bad , you probably have one good “half pickup “.

Just use that half. I’ve donde this before , on a mustang bass , and a precision.

I'd first get my money back, then I'd make a 2 string cigar box bass...
