I've been looking for a cheap P bass for a mod project and some of the SX basses look quite nice...at least on their website! I have an SX Jazz already and it's not bad at all for a 150 dollar bass! The neck feels good and everything feels tight.

I've been to Rondo, Ebay, Amazon...etc... i can't seem to find many P basses that are what I'm after. I'm looking for a cherry or sun burst paint job...and not a Left handed bass! (seems ebay has an abundance of lefts!)

The SX Official Home page shows all kinds of cool colors for the P...and even wood (well, photo wood) options, like flame and quite maple.

They also have a store on the page, but it's spanish , hahaha!

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Look at some of the basses they have:

Isn't Rondo getting the P's in September?
  3. That's what I heard. I wrote Kurt a few months ago and asked him, and he did say the end of September.

My SX Jazz is quite good. The pickups stink...so i replaced em with EMGs (quick change with no soldering!) The bass sounds good and plays on par with most Fender mexi's and the like.

Which brings me to my next thread on TB:
"What's better: An SX or a MIM Fender?"

    Look for it!
  7. Oh wow, not again? :D

I've got an SX Jazz that I've modded a bit myself. I wouldn't quite say that they're as good as a MIM Fender. For one, the neck is bigger. The bodies I would say are as good as a MIM Fender, but the necks just aren't up to snuff. IMO, of course.

The only place to get an SX new is from Rondo. Check eBay and the TB classifieds for used.

I don't know what Kurt has coming in P's come September, but it appears they in the past have had some that you might want:

Yeah, Kurt mentioned to me as well that P's would be available in all their various colors in early fall.

I was lucky and snapped up the last vintage white P a few months back. I've been very happy with it, though it's not without its flaws... but for $140 (after shipping) it's by far the highest value in the entire world of bass, easily.

My issues are nothing major: setup was garbage, naturally, but one turn of the truss rod and a quick intonation adjustment and she plays fine. I took some steel wool to the neck to take some of the harsh gloss down, but it wasn't all that bad to begin with... much better than the gunky MIM jazz neck i also own.

The most annoying thing so far was when I dropped in a set of Labella Flat's which were of a slightly higher guage than the stock strings (stock were .100's, these were .104's)... i slid the strings through the nut slots a few times til they were sliding clear and free, but after playing it for a few weeks the plastic nut developed a crack under the E-string. it's a minor issue, and is still quite playable... one of these days i'll have a tech cut me a new nut, but for now the SX seems to be the ultimate backup / project bass for the price.

  13. Bought this from a Awesome TB'er

    1962 Fender Ri Pups..

    Warmoth Tort Shell PG

    Badass II Bridge

    Orange Caps.

    Dunlop Strap Locks

Does it play better than MIMS and Some Highway Ones i've played?

  14. How does the neck compare? I have never been comfy with a Fender Jazz but like P-Bass necks much more. Maybe this is a way to get a Jazz that I can stand to play?

The why the e string was only .100 gauge. :meh:
  16. The neck is a bit wider on the SX than on the Fender Jazz. It's not so much depth front to back, as it is width across. I took some sandpaper to mine and sanded it down a lot and it feels better, but the width is still wider than I like.

I can't attest to the feel of the Jazz necks, but the neck on my P bass is pretty darn fat, which is a good thing for me. Once I knocked the gloss down a little bit it's actually a very nice feeling neck. Just a little steel wool and the neck feels satin smooth and no longer sticky.

I have an SX 57P and the neck is wide and flat. It's at least a 15" radius.
  19. Thanks for the replies.
Darn, I'm looking for somewhat wide and definitely deep. Guess it may be luck of the draw. What the heck, everything is a compromise I guess. I wish I was healthy enough to actually go to a music store and try basses.

    Thanks Again,
