Hi, I will be buying a Geddy Lee jazz bass very soon, and then i plan to update some parts on it.

What will work best with a J-retro Deluxe unit

    Active pickups? or passive pickups?

I would like a Marcus Miller type slap tone, can i get this using Passive pickups with the J-Retro unit?

If I were you, I'd buy the bass and play it first, THEN decide what else you need to do with it...

The J-Retro will definately work with passive pickups. It may work with active pickups like EMGs, as well, but you might need to get a specific J-Retro model.

You may get a MM type slap tone with or without J-Retro, but then again you may not get MM type slap tone even with Marcus' bass. The tone is in your fingers.

I personally get very Milleresque sound from Squier/EMG combination. Tone controls set flat.
