Hey guys, got a '66 that was stripped down then refinished with a mahoganyish stain. Its original paint, in the cavity, is the cheap sunburst of the CBS era. Everything else is all original, so I'm seriously considering a refin for the first time in my life. Where do I even start? How much do they cost? Maybe I should have Fender do it? Does Fender do them???? Thanks, Dave
Depends on if you are restoring it to the original finish or if you are doing something different. It would be cool to have Fender do it.
Pat Wilkins will do it - http://www.wilkinsguitars.com/colorchart1.html http://www.wilkinsguitars.com/pricelist.html
Check out this place. http://guitargarage.blogspot.com/2008/03/1964-fender-precision-bass-refinish-to.html
Lays Guitars in Ohio specializes in VINTAGE restorations. Not cheap, but they are the best -- IMHO. http://www.laysguitar.com/
I've looked at all of these and some seem quite reasonable. Does anybody know of anyone in my area (Virginia)?
Hey I hear someone has been throwing my blog around in here .... I have a can of Lake Placid Blue that needs to be ON your Jazz bass !! Tell me more about it, krishna
Pat Wilkins is the best at refinishing.. He will get it closest to the original.. and this is coming from a guy who does the same work.
most people ive seen over the years restoring pre cbs fenders dont go to pat wilkins. a lot of scott lentz, lays guitar and jack pidgeon. jack pidgeon was always regarded as the best from ive seen. i had my 62 done by lays.
Don't overlook RSguitarworks in Winchester, KY. They are widely acknowledged to be among the very finest. Their prices are moderate, and the turn-around time is fast. The owners (Roy and Scott) are both bass players. They do custom guitar work for lot's of well-known industry pros. http://www.rsguitarworks.net/ RSguitarsworks restored my 1955 P-bass, including a perfect aged nitro refin-job. Here is a thread about it (and a couple of quickie photos): http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=325380&highlight=reborn Before: After:
My luthier's leaning me towards Lay's. He used to get them/him? to refinish his instrument's 30 years ago.
Love that color, but I'm thinking the original cheap-burst of the early CBS era, its still in the neck pocket and everything. I'll post a pic or two soon. You guys are gonna trip when you see what's on the back.
