Where to visit on my week long vacation...

Discussion in 'Off Topic [BG]' started by keiththebassist, Jul 19, 2012.

  1. So I have a short break from work before the busy season and I'm looking to take a solo trip like I did last year (went to B.C.)

Where should I go for a week? I'd like to keep it in the US but other places are not necessarily out of the question. I'm not broke, but also trying to remain on a budget (probably $1500 in spending after travel expenses, flights are fine). I generally prefer the hostel or cheap motel situation, I'm not a red carpet guy. I don't mind doing this on the cheap side (accommodations/ food etc....)

I generally want to get a good bit of nightlife but also love the outdoors, so cities surrounded by nature are a plus. Good public transportation is a plus, low crime rate and decent night life/music scene is a plus. This will be in August and it's been super hot in most of the country so I'd probably like to stay on either of the coasts. It's not so much for RnR but more to go see some new things. Who has some suggestions for good, relatively inexpensive places to visit? BTW, I do have a valid passport but since I only have a week I don't want to go too far and spend the whole time traveling.

I took a trip up the coast to the sea lion caves and points in between there and Canada. We LOVED it. Not much night life though :) We ended up at Victoria Island before turning around and heading home. It was one of the most memorable trips.

Given where you're at, have you done any spelunking? Cali has some amazing caves to explore. I've been to a few like the moaning caverns and such. I really enjoyed it and it's interesting as hell.
  4. Nice, I really loved Victoria when I went last year but want to mix it up a little. Spelunking sounds cool. Got any links to good spots in Cali? I don't necessarily have to travel far but definitely want to get out of my comfort zone...

Beautiful city, AMAZING food & drink, lots of music and cultural happenings and a wide array of outdoor activities very close by.

Mrs. Skies and I are in love with the Charleston and do a trip every year. I could eat and drink my way through it 1000 times over if I had bankroll.

This is the site my gal used for us and the kids to go to. We've been to 3 so far ( California, Moaning and Black Chasm... I would have added the Virginia City mine in there too, but I think it's now closed? I'm not 100% sure though. That was fun too )

Echo the Tahoe trip. We do that a lot. Vikingsholm is a fantastic destination http://www.vikingsholm.org/
  8. Tahoe is fantastic! but being only 4 hours away I've been there more times than I can count. Good suggestion though! and I'm sure I would just end up at the casino, roulette is my vice...

Grab a mountain bike and head to Arizona or the Vegas area and just ride. Best of luck. I wish you safe travel whatever you decide.

Morro Bay/rock is good fun too.

There are 7 extinct volcanoes along that stretch of the coast which makes for some amazing photo ops. It's so ruggedly beautiful along the coast there ( like Montaña de Oro state park for instance ).

You have a decent night life option around there ( San Luis Obispo ) Wineries and Hearst Castle and.. oh yeah, this place as well :bassist:

If you like golf, there are some pretty excellent options for that too.

Deep Sea fishing ... surfing. It's a good spot for a week.

Still no better suggestion so far than mine, Seattle. :)

Grungy beer drinking night life at one end of town, sophisticated wine drinking night life a few blocks away. Warm weather with skies bluer than you have ever seen. Plenty of cheap eats day or night. All kinds of campgrounds for cheap accomodations. Hiking and biking all around you. Diving, boating, fishing, rock climbing, sky diving, all around.

Darn, why did I move away?

You have a passport...short flight. It's great if you like to fish or drink, or fish and drink, or just drink, did I mention the drinking?

    They also have sand.

I'm not going to kid, if it was me with a week and around 1500 to burn I wouldn't hesitate to go here.

    It's on my bucket list.
