Okay, I've narrowed my compressor search down to two. The Alesis 3630 and the dbx 266XL. I've got some spending money now and it's burning a whole in my pocket. The cost of both is the same, $150. I was just wondering what everyone thought of these two models, and which one is the better buy. I really don't know much about compressors, so anything you have to offer will probably be of help. Thanks a lot.
I used that model dbx in my rack for a while. I tested the Alesis also. Both worked great. The metering is better on the alesis and it has a true gate. Both are fine for bass. I bought dbx because of dependibility issues. Not that I have heard a lot of bad things about alesis, but I have never had anything dbx break. I can't imagine that you wouldn't be happy with either. I am probably the only person on this board that knows where New Melle is!! I live in St. Peters.
I use a dbx 160a and love it, I got the dbx for the same reasons, ive never had anything go wrong with a dbx.
i use the 3630 AND i'm from stl. flora place near tower grove park. anyway, i find no difference except the gate, so i bought the alesis. ymmv dave
I got the Alesis for $99 new on sale at GC. I like it very much. I couldn't tell the difference between it and the dbx when I was recording in the studio....then again I play RAWK MYOOZIK so what do I know.
Yeah, I went and got the dbx today, after talking to the store people about both models. I like it very much. It sounds great and does exactly what I needed it for. I don't know a lot about compressors, but I'm learning and experimenting. Feel free to offer any tips or ideas for me... thanks a lot all..
