I am wondering which of these basses people prefer and for what reasons. I am interested in all of them and I plan on trying out all of them, but the Ampegs are hard to find in my city so I'd like to hear if they're worth tracking down.

    A) Ampeg Dan Armstrong plexi series

    B) Ampeg AMB1, wood series

    C) Musicman/Ernie Ball Stingray series

Save yourself: get the Musicman. The Dan Armstrong weighs a ton and the AMB1 is a 30" scale curiosity (no active preamp, either). Ampeg's strengths lie elsewhere than in instrument design.

I'm in Christopher's camp - those other two don't even belong on the same stage as the Stingray. It's good you plan to try them all out. But I think you'll find the output, the articulation, the build quality, and the tonal spectrum of the `Ray just smokes the Pegs.

The Plexi is a cool vibe, but that's about it. When it comes to instrument performance, Ampeg should have stuck to amps, (and I think their sad bass guitar sales bear that out). They did some interesting things on a couple of models but they never got it right, IMO.
