I am having a difficult time choosing replacement pickups for my Fender American jazz. I use Ampeg amps (SVT, 3 Pro and 7 Pro) and a 610 Ampeg cab and Eden 410XLT ... I often find that my sound often gets muddy when I play live. I do like a warm, fat, full sound in the comfort of my practice room. However, I have never been able to reproduce this sound. I have tried adjusting the preamps of my amps when playing live and have often found that I have to sacrifice too much bottom end ... resulting in a tone that I am totally unhappy with. There are so many replacement jazz pups. I have read tonnes of reviews here on TB. It has gotten to the point where, the more I read, the more confused as to which pup to go with. Can you folks suggest some particular pups and tell me why they are a good choice. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

This is so subjective based upon your strings, style, wood,...

I like Duncans, using a hotter (Q#) in the bridge to balance the outputs some. It's not perfect at home but seems to mix well. Band mates seem to appreciate.

Call Duncan, they are pretty decent to deal with

You may have to try a couple of different sets to find what your looking for. Is there a certain style of tone you're going for?

DiMarzio J's are the "Original Formula?" Aren't they humbuckers, hence completely opposite of original formula?

Good sounding pickups but not like traditional singles.

To the OP check out the J pickups sticky.

I agree that the Model J's a an excellent choice, but based upon what little specific information is in the original post - namely the concern that your tone is getting "muddy" - I have to say I'm really pleased with the Bartolini 9J1 set I have in my Jazz. The tone is very even across the strings, and the low end is more focused while still providing plenty of "oomph".

However, the do NOT sound like traditional single coil pickups. Fine for me, maybe not for you.

  11. Apology for earlier mislead-I meant original formula Di Marzio-not newer versions: area j or ultra j.(personal preference)

For true Fender single coil original non humbucking style I'd go with Fender CS, Fralin or Lollar.

Nordstrand nails the best of it with it being more even then any pickup I have heard from the at time period.

Concur with above assessment. Just installed a set in my American Jazz Special. Great tone, no hum, right price. Really
    recommended !
