Heh, I thought of a new way to do the best bassist thing. !?! Marcus Miller, my favorite jazz and slap player, especially as his is deeply rooted in blues rock, funk, with a solid rhythmic groove. I was early on impressed with Jack Casady and John Entwistle. Noisy rock bassists With lots of top end growl! More recently I’ve a deeper appreciation for bass heavy bassists. My favorites, Lee Dorman on the In a gadda da vida album. Really great sound with upper bass/lower mid definition. And Stephen Stills on the CSN album. Deep, broad Fender tone. Like Wooden Ships.
I was impressed to see Lee Dorman's name in a poll actually, Iron Butterfly get no respect! I saw Entwistle with The John Entwistle band twice in little clubs in MA and RI sometime in the early 2000's. Yes, he could play. They had all their stuff in a 100 seat club and sounded great except they kept tripping the breakers. Entwistle did a long solo which of course tripped the breaker right in the middle. He kept flicking his picks out into the audience and one landed right in my brother folded hands. We were probably ten feet from him as was every other bass player from central MA.
