    Hi All!

I'm looking to upgrade from a 12" combo to a separate head/cab setup. Genres of interest include jazz, blues, rock ('60s & '70s), country, and - occasionally - reggae and bluegrass. A wide variety, I know.

I've never done any gigging (I'm still learning), but the 12" combo just doesn't have the "presence" that my ears are searching for. I get together with a few friends from time to time (drums, keyboard, guitars) and I really have to push the little combo unit to keep from getting lost in the mix.

So I figure it's time to move up.

I want something simple & lightweight, yet powerful enough to keep me satisfied as I grow & learn without having to upgrade again for a long time. (That's assuming, of course, I wont be "discovered," then invited to play at the next blues or jazz festival and suddenly need a 2000 watt head pushing a couple of 8x10's! :p)

I'm thinking a head capable of 500 - 1,000 watts at 4 ohms would be perfect. But I've also got a wife, two kids and a mortgage, so I can't go all out.

I haven't decided on a cabinet yet, but the idea of a 2x12 (vertically stacked) seems to make sense to me. Small enough footprint to be manageable at home, but still able to move a lot of air, if I want to take it out.

    Having said all that... :meh:

Which of the following two heads would YOU choose, and why?

    Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0
    -OR-
    Genz Benz STM-600 Streamliner

Other recommendations are appreciated, but please answer the question first.

Thanks in advance for your input!

Both are quality amps. Which one depends on your ear/taste, etc.

On another note, you don't need to be consider 500-1000 watts either. Your lack of oomph is due to the single 12. All but the cream of the crop will get buried with drums and guitars. A quality 212 like you mentioned is a good gigging rig. If you like Genz stuff, the NeoX 212 is the best thing in their entire lineup, it's a well designed, true gig rig.

Those are both fantastic amps, so you really can't go wrong either way...the STM is a little more classic meets modern, and the Shuttle is straight up clean and modern, though you can push it as well...Do you mainly play electric? I play upright and some electric, but if you're mainly an electric player, I'd lean toward the Streamliner, personally. I play a ShuttleMax 12.0 and LOVE it :)

  4. I can get a great vintage type sound out of my Shuttle. I'd definitely go Shuttle. Far more versatile imo.
    I'll get my coat....

If you like a warmer, vintage, tube-like tone, the Streamliner will be more plug-n-play for you. If I were to get a Genz amp, it would be that one. The others have more eq, more versatile for different types of music, etc., but their sort of "default voice" is too slick and clean to be my one gig amp I'd bring and use for everything.

But that's me, not you, so none of that really matters. Either way, you're going to get quality and some of the best customer service in the business. I still say get a NeoX though....just plain good sounding cabs.

My ShuttleMax 12 will pretty much do anything I ask of it...but not as 'plug and play' as an STM for sure

200 watt tube amp. Do not understand using solidstate heads if youre not using it for the aggressive high end.

I was in the same dilemma. I chose the Streamliner. I'm sure I would have been very happy with either one though...and I'd like to get a Shuttle one of these days.

I love both heads so much...you REALLY can't go wrong either way

  11. I would go with the Shuttle. I like the modern sound of it vs the Streamliner.

FYI: You can usually catch them at HelloMusic.com for $500.

I went with the Streamliner 600 and never looked back.
For what your into, it will work great.
Just get the right cab, it make a difference.
    I paired my 600, with a Schroeder 2x15 cab.
It kills for Blues, Jazz, 70's Rock.

  13. The Streamliner has anything but an aggressive high end. Very smooth and glassy. The Streamliner is not a solid state head. It has an all tube pre that is faithfully reproduced by a solid state output amp. Is it the same as an all tube head? Nope.

Is it aggressive and totally clean like an all SS head? No way! Really nice compromise between the two tonally, and certainly way smaller and way lighter and way more dependable.

    Neither is the Shuttle

  15. I would go streamliner as well. i have a STL600 and NEOX212 and is the perfect setup as i play old school reggae. But, if I were to buy a head right now i would go for the new Shuttle 9.2 as reviews are good and the tube section is even better.

This just makes no sense at all. What in the world makes you think you have to have "aggressive high end" if you're playing an SS amp, or that tube amps don't or can't have "aggressive high end"?

I love tube amps, but it's the speakers they came with that lacked the "aggressive high end", whatever that means, not the amp.

  17. Yes I know. I wasn't making any point by not mentioning the Shuttle.

However, one tube pre's are much more like SS than they are like tube amps.

The all-tube pre's are much more like tube amps then they are like SS.

I'd like the versatility to be able to dial in both classic and modern, which is why I like the idea of the tube preamp. (The Markbass Little Mark Tube 800 looks like the perfect choice, but my budget likes the GBs a little better.)

Right now I'm playing strictly electric bass. But I wouldn't mind trying to learn upright in the future.

    Thanks for the input.

I've read more than a few posts that highlight GB's customer service, so that's why I narrowed it down to these two.

The NeoX 212T definitely looks like the choicest cabinet. I just can't swing the price they're commanding for new, and I haven't seen any used ones advertised. Maybe I can find a cheap used 2x10 until I can save up for it.

    Thanks for the input.

Definitely the NeoX212T! That is what I am running and it is amazing! I would go for the Shuttle amp to be able to cover multiple genres. Might go for the 9.2 though, just to get a little more out of the tube channel if you ever need it.
