Peavey Max 158 15W Bass Amplifier for $50 on Craigslist, and Fender rumble 100 for $90. Which one should I go for? I am looking for a practice amp and the rumble seems too big, but it would be a great deal too...

I have a Peavey Max 158; absolutely NOT!
With such a small speaker it sounds like you're playing out of a small boombox; no bass at all...

BTW, I LOVE and have Peavey stuff, just not this one....:rollno:

Don't even look at the Peavey; just get the Fender.
  5. $90 is a steal for a Rumble 100. I would jump on it right away. It's so cheap that it's workings are suspect. Verify it works.

I vote for the extra power and cone as well. IDK what size the speaker is in the Fender, but I'm sure it isnt an 8.
Nothing wrong with an 8 in the general sense of speaker size only, but a 1x8 low wattage practice amp will leave you underwhelmed.

The first time you play with a drummer or at least more than an acoustic guitar you will see why the higher power and greater surface area win.

You get the Peavey and tell me what town the CR listing for the Rumble is in. :hyper:

Check out that Rumble 100. For $90 USD it is most likely an original (version 1) 1x15 that were made from 2003 through 2009. They are very good, but they are on the large side, and also heavy as the cabinet is made of MDF. Still it would make for a good first amp if in good condition. Just like buying a used car, buying a used amp can be dicey. If you don't know how to check out a amp, take a friend that does.

  16. Well he didn't say it was a Rumble v3. At that price I imagine its the older one. Either way though as long as it works, get the rumble.

So you can waste $50, or spend $90 on something you can actually use...

The real thing you want to do is minimize the amount of money you spend on useless things. A 15 watt bass amp is, aside from making odd noises, in your bedroom, a useless thing. If the Rumble works it's a potentially useful device in several places. Maybe not in a really loud band, but in some bands it'll work just fine.
